The story is set in 1872 and begins at the Reform Club in London. After reading a newspaper article stating that a new railway in India has theoretically made it possible to travel the world in 80 days, the meticulously punctual Phileas Fogg bets his fellow club members ÂŁ20,000 that he can accomplish the feat. Leaving that very night, Fogg and his loyal French valet, Passepartout, embark on a globe-trotting expedition using trains, steamships, and various other modes of transport. Along their journey, they face unexpected natural disasters, cultural obstacles, and a persistent Scotland Yard detective named Inspector Fix, who mistakenly suspects Fogg of robbing the Bank of England
