Set in a delightfully smelly, slightly Victorian-inspired world, the story follows eleven-year-old Eddie Dickens. When Eddie’s parents contract a strange disease that turns them yellow, makes them crinkly, and smell like hot water bottles, it is decided he must be sent away to live with his relatives at their home, Awful End.Â
Unfortunately, his relatives are Mad Uncle Jack and Even-Madder Aunt Maud (who is never seen without her stuffed stoat, Malcolm). What follows is not a straightforward journey, but a hilariously chaotic adventure of errors that lands Eddie everywhere from an audience with the Empress of China to St Horrid’s Home for Grateful Orphans.
