I knocked again, this time a little harder, lest he would miss the sound but this time the door quietly opened. I walked in tentatively as I was edgy anyways, I was relieved to find there was no startling me, no one grabbing me and no pins dropping. In fact, there was an eerie silence and the silence was so intense that it made me wonder if sound even existed. To add to it, the darkness was competing with the silence in its intensity. As I walked through the room, I used my hands in place of eyes, trying to search for a switch to turn on so that it would flood the room with light and help me find the drunken ass. I tried calling him out two-three times but there was no answer. I was losing all hope when suddenly my fingers stuck gold. Electricity came to my rescue, illuminating the room in a dark, yellowy glow as my hand turned on the switch. I ran my eyes across the sparsely-lit room until my eyes fell on my friend, sprawled on the ground, like he had been on the pavement the other day. Only this time in addition to the stink of alcohol and the dirt on his clothes, there was something red flowing from below the man, lying face first on the ground. Not for a moment did the possibility of that being blood crossed my sanguine mind. About the Author Ishaan Kumbkarni was born at Kangra in Himachal Pradesh and spent his teenage years in Ludhiana.
