Little Manfred by Michael Morpurgo

The story is set primarily in two time periods: World War II and \(1966\). It follows the journey of Walter, a German survivor of the sunken battleship Bismarck. He becomes a prisoner of war and is taken to England, where he lives with a British host family. He forms a deep friendship with a young girl named Grace, and before returning to Germany after the war, he leaves her a little carved wooden dachshund (the “Little Manfred”) as a token of their bond. Years later, the story weaves back into \(1966\) as the World Cup brings the two friends together again.
